As a restaurant geek, the annual James Beard nomination announcements in February are always an exciting time. Although I am hardly a food elitist, I love the James Beard Foundation for its care of the people behind great food in the U.S., whether hometown favorite and affordable places like St. Louis's Mai Lee or classic old guards like Seattle's Canlis.
A few weeks ago, the 2020 nominations went out and I was delighted to see new and old names on the list. As I have historically been ignorant of wine, I usually only peruse the list for familiar restaurants and chefs. However after taking this class, I decided it was about time I pay attention to the wine nominations.
Namely, I checked out the nominations for Outstanding Wine Program and Outstanding Wine, Spirits, or Beer Producer.
With a better awareness of which restaurants lead in the wine category, I'll definitely go out of my way to try them in the future.
