The Bachelor is educating the world about new wine regions -- Iowan wine, anyone?

For any fans of the Bachelor, you will have seen that this week's episode featured a wine tasting date in Des Moines, Iowa. I don't know about you, but I had never thought of Iowa as a major wine growing region, and this prompted me to do some research -- is Iowa another contender for the next great emerging wine region?

It turns out yes, Iowa does have a wine industry, but whether its wine is worth writing home about remains to be seen. It turns out the industry is only about ~30 years old (foodandwine.com), but there are some notable wineries and grapes to watch out for.

A few key facts:

  • ~100 wineries
  • ~275 vineyards
  • 8 wine trails
  • $420 million economic impact
  • 358K wine-related tourists per year!
