Why I am taking this class

As a young teenager, I recall looking through my parents’ wine collection, reading the names on the bottles and thinking to myself that there is no way they could possibly taste the differences between these wine varieties. However, these analyses of bottles heightened my attentiveness, leading me to take notice of which bottles would be opened at parties, which bottles would be ordered at celebratory dinners, and the Robert Parker ratings discussed by my parents and their fellow wine enthusiasts. By the time I turned 21, after years of sitting through wine-related conversations, I couldn’t resist the offer to tag along as my parents visited Venge Vineyards in Calistoga. That trip not only increased my wine vocabulary and enlightened me about differing taste profiles, but also exposed me to the complexity of the winemaking process. I was astounded that such meticulous production processes were taking place all over the world and wanted to dive more deeply into the business of getting wine to the masses. I wondered how a winery grew to widespread popularity, how winemakers continued to meet the high standards of their craft despite potential roadblocks, and whether quality wine was truly accessible to consumers on a global scale. I look forward to gaining these insights and so much more in the class.
