I’m taking this class because I am starting a brewery after graduation, and this class will give me a framework for thinking about the issues involved in the alcohol business.
I do love wine. I grew up drinking it with my parents. And it is so rich — it evokes history (Homer writes about “wine dark seas”), religion (wine as Sacrament), the earth (as an agricultural product), and community (the pleasure of drinking with friends).
Because I love wine, I was disgusted when a friend handed me a red solo cup of warm Yellowtail Chardonnay in college. I realized that my peers and I could not afford to drink the kind of wine my parents do. But I could afford good beer. I learned that many of the tools I had acquired for wine appreciation also applied to beer. It evokes similar themes.
I look forward to furthering my appreciation of wine and learning some important lessons for my future business. Cheers!
