As a teenager, I remember overhearing my parents float lofty phrases like a "juicy new world cab" or "quintessential chateauneuf du pape" without feeling particularly clued into what they were talking about. But over the last ten years, as my personal and professional palette evolved, their passion for viniculture and grapes eventually became my own. Slowly but surely, I have been fortunate to explore a handful of incredible wine regions, from Napa to Mendoza to Bordeaux. But still, so many questions remain – from what drives the wine we see on store shelves to how ever-changing consumer preferences are impacting global production. My raw fascination and passion was the primary impetus for enrolling.
Secondarily, I was drawn to the global nature of the course. Food and wine are often defining elements of a country's culture, rituals and history and understanding both the interplay and disparities on a global scale was exciting.
Finally, beyond the intricate business and cultural aspects, I aspire to improve my palette! Although I know what varietals I love, I'm excited to try new types of wines and spirits from around the world.
I associate wine with incredible people, conversations and experiences, so I'm very much looking forward to expanding my purview over the course of the quarter.
